Prince of wales acute services building construction milestone

Topping out ceremony for the Acute Services Building

On March 15 2021, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Health Minister Brad Hazzard visited the Randwick Campus Redevelopment site to celebrate construction of the new $780 million Prince of Wales Hospital Acute Services Building reaching its highest point.

The project is part of an unprecedented $1.5 billion investment in health at Randwick to deliver new models of care, ground-breaking health, education and research partnerships, and economic growth to directly benefit South East Sydney and the NSW community.

The occasion was marked with the ceremonial placement of a locally sourced Eastern Suburbs Banksia, an endangered native tree species unique to South Eastern Sydney. This long held tradition, of placing a tree on top of newly constructed infrastructure is intended to bring good luck to all those who will engage with the building in the future.

In addition, sand was also placed into the final concrete pour to acknowledge the La Perouse Aboriginal community’s continued connection to this site. The sand from the ancient sand dunes on which this hospital stands, anchors the incredible history of this site to the new hospital.

Due to be complete in 2022, the hospital will include a new emergency department, extra inpatient beds, a new helipad, intensive care unit and shared operating theatres for the Campus.

The next phase of the Redevelopment, Sydney Children’s’ Hospital Stage 1 and Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre is on track to be completed 2025 and the UNSW Health Translation Hub to be open in 2026.
