The $658 million Sydney Children’s Hospital Stage 1 and Minderoo Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre brings world-leading clinical care, research and education together under one roof to transform kids’ health.

Our partners, the Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick, Children’s Cancer Institute and UNSW Sydney have a rich culture of collaboration, blended with a passionate commitment to transforming kids’ health through integrated research and care. 

As we look to the future, we are working together to provide our communities with a new state-of-the-art paediatric health and research facility; flexible and technologically advanced to drive health care, research and education innovations.

The Sydney Children’s Hospital Stage 1 and Minderoo Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre will be delivered as a single project in an integrated facility, to transform paediatric health care locally, nationally and globally. We see this as a generational opportunity to reimagine the way care is delivered and will have a lasting impact on children and their families.

Services in the new building will include:

• A new and enhanced children’s intensive care unit, including a new close observation unit 

• A new and larger children's Emergency Department  

• A new medical short stay unit 

• A new neurosciences centre 

• A new virtual care centre and hospital command centre 

• Inpatient units for medical, surgical and sleep studies 

• The new Minderoo Children's Comprehensive Cancer Centre incorporating a day oncology centre and inpatient units, as well as a dedicated new bone marrow transplant unit  

• Co-located laboratories to support cancer research, education and training 

• A new general pharmacy with advanced therapeutics and a sterile suite  

• Improved parent amenities, including new overnight beds for parents and bereavement rooms 

• Education and training spaces. 

Where are we now? 

On 10 June 2022 the NSW Government announced John Holland Pty Ltd as main works contractor will deliver the state-of-the art facility to be located in the Randwick Health and Innovation Precinct. Main works commenced in September 2022, with completion expected in 2025.

Building a new hospital is a complex process involving three phases: planning, design and delivery.

Planning and design commenced in 2019 and the project marked the completion of detailed design in late 2021. The Environmental Impact Statement was publicly exhibited in mid-2021 and improvements to the design were incorporated in response to agency and community submissions. The Department of Planning, Industry and Environment provided planning consent for the project in December 2021. While the design process for interior spaces continues with input from staff, patients and families, as at early 2023 the project is now in the delivery phase.

Transforming the health experience 

This significant new investment in paediatric health at Randwick is an opportunity to transform the way care is delivered now and into the future. We are putting patients and their families at the centre of planning, to ensure the overall experience supports an even higher standard of care than is provided today at the Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick.

To do this we have asked over 2,000 children, patients, families, carers and staff what is important to them, to better understand how we can meet the needs of all users in the new building.

Using their extensive feedback, we have designed places and spaces that will feel more like a home, promote health and wellness, family togetherness and patient centered care.

The new building will be safe and welcoming for the whole community, with the provision of areas such as the dedicated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander gathering space for families in the Front of House.

Delivering the project 

This significant investment in the Sydney Children’s Hospital Stage 1 and Minderoo Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre includes $478 million from the NSW Government; $100 million from the Commonwealth Government; $25 million from the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation; and $25 million from Children’s Cancer Institute.

UNSW is providing a $30 million in-kind contribution for the Minderoo Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre within the adjacent UNSW Health Translation Hub. In April 2022, the Minderoo Foundation was announced as naming rights partner to the Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre, announcing a $15 million donation as part of an overall $50 million in philanthropic contributions towards the project. 

The NSW Government has invested over $1 billion in the Randwick Health and Innovation Precinct, strengthening health, research, education and innovation outcomes to ensure NSW is at the forefront of health research and education internationally.
